WWW Tip #1 - What to do with a website address

If someone gives you a website address (also know as a domain name or URL) and you want to check out that website, then type that website address into the ADDRESS BAR located at the top of your web browser and hit ENTER.

Many people mistake the search engine box seen on Google or Yahoo! for a place to enter a website address. Not all website can be found by searching for them and its easier just to type the URL in the address bar.

WWW Tip #2 - On screen Resolution vs. Printing Resolution

The size (normally in MB) of a picture depends on the quality or resolution of that image. If a picture is used for a website, then it has a low resolution of 72 dpi (dots per inch). If a picture needs to be printed out, then it has a high resolution of 300 dpi. That means if you find a picture online that you want to make a print from, make sure you get the high resolution version so it prints nice and clear.

WWW Tip #3 - Always provide a link to friends

If your business has a website, it is good practice to build a maintain a page just for links. Reason is that you can link to friends or other businesses to help direct traffic to them and they can do the same for you. Plus having more links going back and forth help your rankings in the search engines.

WWW Tip #4 - META tags are important

What is a META tag? A META tag is a bit of information that is kept in the header of your web page that no one sees, but the search engines use for information for things like Keywords and Descriptions. A lot of website miss the chance at being found in the search engine because they META tags were never added to the page and therefore the web crawlers for the search engines don't have much to work with.

WWW Tip #5 - Keep website content up-to-date

One of the major downfalls of a website is that many people cannot find the time to update the content on their website. They realize its a lot of work at times and think no one is reading it in the first place. The truth is that if you want people to visit your website again and again, then you need to provide something new for them to return. If you cannot find the time to do it yourself, then it is best to hire someone that is dedicated to updating web sites so they can keep your website fresh and ready for repeat visitors.

WWW Tip #6 - Create a Monthly Newsletter

A good way to keep people interested in your business and/or website is to generate a monthly newsletter so they know what new information is available and they will want to come back and visit you again. Having a newsletter going out more than once a month is good if you have a lot going on at once and if you let people know how often the newsletter will be sent. Most people will unsubscribe from a newsletter if they receive one too often and never find the time to read any of it.

WWW Tip #7 - Keep in touch the right way

Many people are in the habit of getting an email from a friend, finding it very funny, and then forwarding it on to 20 or 30 of their other friends so they can get a good laugh. That maybe okay for your personal stuff, however its NEVER good for your business.

If you want to get in touch with people, such as setting up a newsletter, always use a program or service that sends your message out individually, not with 20 or 30 names in the "To: or CC:" field. Not only does that look unprofessional, some of those email addresses maybe linked to someone else's newsletter and therefore you just added 20 or 30 of your friends to someone else's list without realizing it.

WWW Tip #8 - Content is key

The only reason a person visits a website is to find information. The information they seek is available by the content that website provides. Without content, there is no website. Whenever you start a website project be sure to have all of your content ready. It doesn't matter how cool your website looks or how well its designed, if you don't have the content to fill the pages, then people won't have a reason to visit your site.
